On Sunday, April 12, Lauren Wehner and MJ Lindsey ran a booth for the Annual Science Expeditions open house held each year at UW-Madison to teach kids about radiation detection, nuclear medicine, and debunk some common misconceptions. This event features tons of booths, talks, and lab tours.
The booth was titled, “Envisioning a Rad Future: Discovering and Debunking Radiation.” They had a stuffed bear and a very makeshift “PET/CT” with anatomical scans for the bear to take kids through the process of theranostics in which patients receive an imaging agent for diagnostics followed by a therapeutic agent. Kids loved giving the bear his medicine and interpreting the scans.
They also had Geigers loaned by rad safety to teach about detection and what radiation is along with some posters teaching about environment and medicinal sources of radioactivity and a poster about ITPT, careers, and the inspiring interview graphics designed by Lyna Dinh. The kids went crazy for the nuclear medicine themed stickers too! Info on science expeditions: https://science.wisc.edu/science-expeditions/
