35th Rankin-Skatrud Memorial Lecture: Exercise and Cancer – A Translational Perspective

April 11, 2019 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Presented by Bente Klarlund Pedersen, MD; Professor of Internal and Integrative Medicine and Infectious Disease; Director, Centers for Physical Activity Research, Inflammation and Metabolism, University of Copenhagen

In over 600 publications, Dr. Pedersen’s group has identified skeletal muscle as an endocrine organ that, via production of cytokines influences the function of other organs such as pancreas, liver, brain and fat. Her translational research focuses on developing targeted exercise regiments for specific diseases- such as diabetes, obesity, cancer, lung and cardiovascular disease- by applying a strategy “…from bedside to bench and back again”.

John Rankin, MD (1924-1981) and James Skatrud, MD (1948-2006) were long-time UW-Madison professors of Medicine and Preventive Medicine, with a strong legacy of leadership and excellence in science and the mentoring of clinicians and scientists. Their Lectureship fund was established in 1983 through private donations to the UW Foundation. Each year it funds travel awards to deserving research trainees and brings scholars in epidemiology, health policy, physiology, and pulmonary medicine to UW.

This year’s lecture is co-sponsored by the UW Department of Kinesiology.
