University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center Research Retreat
“Intercepting Cancer Using Diagnostics and Therapeutics.”
This year’s event focused on Intercepting Cancer Using Diagnostics and Therapeutics. The in-person event allows us to come together to engage, share research visions, and learn from each other.
The contributions from each individual to our Carbone Cancer Center team—from trainees, to administrators, researchers, clinicians and faculty — allow us to move forward together and be the driving force for research, prevention, and treatment initiatives critical to defeating cancer in Wisconsin and around the world.
“Lineage Plasticity in Prostate Cancer: Biomarker and Therapy Considerations”
Himisha Beltran, MD
Genitourinary Oncology
Associate Professor
Harvard Medical School
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Dr. Beltran is a medical oncologist and physician scientist focused on understanding mechanisms of treatment resistance in prostate cancer and lineage plasticity during cancer evolution. She is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medical Oncology in the Lank Division of Genitourinary Oncology and the Division of Molecular and Cellular Oncology at DFCI and Harvard Medical School. Her lab has specifically focused on the mechanisms underlying the development of neuroendocrine prostate cancer, an aggressive subtype of advanced prostate cancer. Dr. Beltran is also the Correlative Science Committee Chair for the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology GU Committee and plays an active role in several national and international committees and programs including ASCO, ESMO, and the NCI SPORE program, as well as team science projects such as the SU2C-PCF Dream Team. She serves as Director of Translational Research with Medical Oncology at DFCI and is passionate about advancing precision medicine for patients. Dr. Beltran works closely with a multidisciplinary team to translate new scientific discoveries into the clinic in the form of biomarker-driven therapeutics to improve patient care.

“Cell Free Cancer Detection and Longitudinal Monitoring via Single Molecule Methylomes and DNA Fragmentomics”
Hanlee Ji, MD
Associate Professor of Medicinal Oncology
Stanford University
Stanford Health Care
Dr Ji is a physician scientist and Professor at Stanford University. His research is focused on basic and translational research questions in cancer genetics and genomics through new genome sequencing technologies. His clinical interests are in gastrointestinal cancer and genetics. Supporting his research, Dr. Ji has been the recipient of multiple awards from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Doris Duke Foundation and American Cancer Society. His research group has developed numerous DNA sequencing technologies for the characterization of cancer genomes, several of which have used for clinical diagnostics. His current research contributes to multiple NIH programmatic efforts including the NHGRI’s Human Pangenome Reference Consortium, NCI Innovative Molecular Analysis Technology program and the NCI Metastasis Research Network. More recently, his group has focused on developing new single molecule sequencing technologies to identify clinically relevant multi-omic features from cell free DNA, single cell mutation genomics and spatial topography of potential cancer targets.
