UW Carbone’s SCORE program, funded by the American Cancer Society, offers undergraduates a 10‑week paid, mentored research experience in cancer science. Interns gain hands‑on exposure to basic, translational, or population health research, while building skills for future careers in science and health professions.
Beyond the summer, SCORE provides monthly academic‑year engagements, career development workshops, networking opportunities, and a research symposium, with extension activities available throughout the school year.
What Interns Experience
- Cancer research in Carbone Cancer Center labs (basic, translational, or population health science)

Program Details
June 1-August 7, 2026, 32-40 hours/week
- Eligibility: Undergraduate students with ≥4 semesters completed; GPA 3.0+; pursuing science majors (oncology, biomedical science, molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, or related fields)
- $5,000 stipend
- Madison city bus pass provided
- Housing is available on campus through UW Campus Housing but not paid for by the program.
Application
Applications are available December 1, 2025 and are due February 6, 2026. The application must be completed at one time as your session will not save within the system. Needed materials include:
- Proof of enrollment- an unofficial copy of your current school transcript that includes your name and the school name
- Letter of recommendation from a professional relationship that expresses their support for your participation in SCORE. Family members cannot be professional references.
- Personal statement (max 250 words): What qualities and experiences have best prepared you to meet the scientific and professional expectations of this program? In your response, describe any laboratory experience you have gained through classroom activities, independent research, or participation in other programs.
- Recorded (video) response (max 3 minutes, video platform linked in the application): Among the many learning opportunities related to careers in science and medicine, what motivated you to apply to the SCORE internship? In your response you may wish to discuss how this program aligns with your academic and career goals, describe the nature of your interest in cancer research, and explain what you hope to gain from participating in this experience.
