Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) are essential and foundational elements of the mission and overall strategic plan of the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center (UWCCC). UWCCC is dedicated to fostering DEI while pursuing our three goals: innovative and impactful research, patient- and family-centered care, and community and collaborative partnerships.
A Message from our Director
Dr. Howard Bailey, MD
“Our work is guided by three overarching goals: research, patient care, and collaborative partnerships. In achieving each goal, diversity, equity and inclusion are essential. We are engaged in an intentional partnership between the University of Wisconsin and UW Health to develop and maintain a diverse workforce, create collaborative initiatives, and strategically hire into DEI pathways. Our collective effort is to ensure that the UWCCC is a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community.”
Diversity Partners
We share a common diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) strategy with the School of Medicine and Public Health. We also partner closely with UW Health, our academic health system, on diversity initiatives.

Plan to Enhance Diversity
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) released the Cancer Center Support Grants (CCSG) guidelines to include a new core component called the Plan to Enhance Diversity, or PED. The UWCCC’s Plan to Enhance Diversity (PED) constitutes a commitment of resources to enhance the diversity of membership, leadership, staff, trainees, and advisors. Our PED is a cornerstone to achieving the UWCCC mission and vision to defeat cancer by rapidly applying groundbreaking research, prevention, and treatment.
Our DWETC Committee
The Carbone Cancer Center is committed to being a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for our faculty, staff, and trainees. The Diverse Workforce and Equity Transformation Committee guides and holds the UWCCC accountable to the PED, monitors the implementation of the PED, and includes members at all ranks.
