Dr. Smith oversees and facilitates the broad spectrum of population science research and outreach being conducted by UWCCC members, including the Cancer Prevention and Control Program justifying the effort requested for these activities. Dr. Smith also oversees the Wisconsin Cancer Control Program (the UWCCC-run and State-supported, statewide cancer control program), Cancer Health Disparities Initiative and interacts with Dr. Shull regarding the Cancer in Populations Outcomes Data Shared Resource. A major focus of her efforts is to foster the collaborations that will extend programmatic science into population studies to reduce the burden of cancer in our catchment.

Dr. Smith’s UWCCC efforts compliment her role as Director of the Community Academic Partnerships (CAP) Core of the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (CTSA). She is an internationally known expert with a history of independent funding (R01CA144835) in Health Services and Community Engagement Research. Dr. Smith is currently examining guideline adherence, short/long-term health outcomes, and the effect of insurance coverage for virtual colonoscopy on colorectal cancer screening, as well as the role of various health interventions on disease outcomes in patients from diverse communities.
