11th Annual Bioethics Symposium

Reproduction and Research: Ethics and Pregnancy in Clinical Trials

Join us for an afternoon of education, discussion, and debate with national and local experts. The Symposium will begin with keynote talks by:

• Anne Drapkin Lyerly, MD, MA, Professor of Social Medicine and Associate Director, Center for Bioethics, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
• Zachary Stowe, MD, Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Women’s Mental Health Program, University of Wisconsin-Madison
• Rebecca Kukla, PhD, Professor of Philosophy, Georgetown University, and Senior Research Scholar at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics

Following the keynote talks, the Symposium will feature a “Mock IRB” simulation in which expert panelists pull back the curtain on how Institutional Review Boards evaluate potentially controversial research protocols involving pregnant participants. Joining the keynote speakers on the Mock IRB will be UW-Madison’s Alta Charo, JD, Professor of Law, and Norman Fost, MD, MPH, Emeritus Professor of Bioethics and Pediatrics.

This event is presented by the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and the Department of Medical History and Bioethics. It is free and open to the public. Seating is general admission.

Fourth-year Medical Students: With approval from the course and clerkship directors, Madison-based fourth-year students will be excused from all clinical duties with the expectation that you will attend the symposium.
